The mission of Sedation Certification is to certify non-anesthesia sedation providers, such as nurses, ensuring their compliance with patient safety standards established by The Joint Commission and other healthcare accrediting bodies. This certification program is designed to equip nurses and other non-anesthesia sedation providers with the necessary training in patient assessment, sedation and emergency medications, airway management, and emergency equipment for moderate sedation to establish competence in providing safe and effective patient sedation.
The Sedation Certification program stands out as a competency-based, self-paced, personalized online course specifically focused on sedation certification. It serves as the standard for safe and effective sedation practices, meeting all accreditation criteria for The Joint Commission (TJC), DNV, and AAAHC accrediting organizations.
The Sedation Competency Simulator has been developed to replicate a realistic sedation scenario, validating a sedation provider’s training and capability in applying knowledge, technical skills, and abilities for safe and effective sedation, aligning with the standards set by The Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies.
Registered Nurses can earn the Certified Sedation Registered Nurse (CSRN™) credential online along with 10 contact hours. The certification is valid for two years from the completion date.
In order to register, professionals need a current RN, PA, MD, DO, or DDS license along with current ACLS or PALS certification. After registering, creating an account, and logging in with the password received via email, learners will gain access to a range of competencies focusing on moderate sedation. These include self-evaluation through a pre-sedation competency checklist, defining levels of sedation, discussing guidelines for sedation set by The Joint Commission, identifying critical elements of patient preoperative assessment, assessing airway using Mallampati classifications, understanding oxygen delivery systems and airway adjuncts, discussing pharmacology of common moderate sedation agents, recognizing potential complications and appropriate treatments, as well as understanding pre and post-operative techniques in suggestibility and semantics.
The course consists of 12 sections that are gated and tested independently. Each section requires an accumulative overall test score of 80% or higher to pass, with one opportunity for retesting allowed. The course includes a pre- and post-sedation competency evaluation, eight video lectures, two case simulations, and a PDF course manual. Upon passing and completing the evaluation, learners are immediately notified to download and print their Contact Hours Certificate. A frameable CSRN Certification will be sent by mail within 21 days. Additionally, participants receive a complimentary one-year membership with the American Association of Moderate Sedation Nurses (AAMSN).
The Sedation Competency Simulator replicates real-life sedation procedures to enhance providers’ skills in 14 patient care categories featuring eight sedation cases in each category. Continuing Education Credits are Sponsored by MyCEcredit.
